What ever we thought was going to happen this week in Belfast with two events being held at the same time all I can say is that it was beyond exception. The Feile an Phobail is a cultural event that brings in debates, dancing singing, music on the big stage and small stages. This is an annual event that began in Belfast in 1988 to offset the violence and riots that took place in protest against internment in 1971when over 300 men (nearly all catholic/republican) were imprisoned without charge under the Special Powers Act. The Fleadh aimed to provide an alternative that would deal with the politics through music, debate, sports and other actions. It has become one of the biggest events of the year. We as communist organised the first Fleadh event in 2009 and in 2011 we began the Madge Davison Memorial Lecture which has been successful over the years.
The second event being held was the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 which is also an annual event and it usually held in a different city or town each year. The Fleadh Cheoil is the culmination of competitions in the 32 counties of Ireland. Those winning the competitions in singing, fiddle playing, lilting, dancing and other musical feats go onto compete in the All Ireland Fleadh. But it is more than competitions as hundreds of people stage impromptu performances; pubs, streets, and parks and so on are filled with the sound of music. It was great enjoyment to see young children dancing and playing musical instrument in the streets. It was also impressive to see the protestant flute and other bands playing breaking down the barriers. The MAC was the hub for the Irish language gatherings. The Fleadh Cheoil officially opened in Belfast on the 2nd of August until the 9th, The city celebrated together with powerful performances, family-friendly events and vibrant outdoor music spilling onto streets across the city. A main stage was in the grounds of the Belfast City Hall from 10am in the morning until 11.00am at night.
Together the two fleadhs took the city by storm. So wait for it– the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2027 will be held in Belfast again next year so if you want a week or more of enjoyment-be prepared!
