THE Irish Times and the Belfast Telegraph carried articles in their 8th September's editions on the person behind the anti-migrant demonstrations in Dover and Portsmouth. He was named as Daniel Thomas who describes himself as "Danny Tommo" on social media. He has been around Britain's hard-right activist scene for the past decade, following his release from prison after serving a two-year sentence for attempted kidnapping in 2016. He made a mess of that as the man that Thomas claimed had stolen £10,000 of drug money was the wrong person. He says he became religious after finding God. How many times have we heard that one especially in this neck of the woods? He is part of what the paper describes as the highly politicised right wing Christian evangelical movement and this year he launched what is know as the Patriot Platform. He is not your run of the mill working class as he was educated at a fee-paying school and hails from an affluent area in Hayling Island. He was the bodyguard for Stephen Yaxley-Lennon who has ditched his upper-class name for the working-class Tommy Robinson which was the name of a Luton Town football club soccer hooligan.
The fact is that Thomas and Yaxley-Lennon are hiding behind their newly found religion indeed they have formed the Army of Christian Patriots. This must be of concern to those who consider themselves as real Christians especially as the likes of these two are ace at preaching hatred and acting in a manner that would be abhorrent to many but not all who adhere to the Christian faith. The Belfast Telegraph ran a piece under the heading "Dover protest man 'inspired' by visit to Belfast during racist rioting." It was in relation to a visit by Thomas to Belfast during the racist rioting in June 2026 and was pictured in the east of the city with local far-right figures one of whom was named in the paper and goes by the nickname of Freedom Dad on-line.
This person described as a former UVF bank robber, posted pictures on Facebook on June 9th, the first day of the riots, with Thomas and several others. More recently Freedom Dad commented "Well done Danny Tommo and the new patriot movement, great work in Dover today". Also pictured in June was an individual who was jailed for being part of a mob that killed a Catholic man in 1992. While being driven round Belfast. Thomas documented parts of the disorder and told his followers how he "came away inspired." He said that "It seems that the patriotic people of Belfast are literally standing up and sending a very clear message to the authorities. He went on to say, "I stand shoulder to shoulder with the brave patriots of Belfast, proud sons and daughters of Ulster." It is amazing, or maybe not, that some of those "patriots" have criminal convictions and not for petty crimes either.
In its edition of the 10th September the Belfast Telegraph had a follow up report under the heading "English far-right thugs copy all black uniform of racists here", obviously in reference to the wearing of all black in Dover and Portsmouth. Of course, these people are in good company as Mussolini's fascists wore black shirts and then we had Oswald Mosley's fascist crowd also known as the Blackshirts whose slogan was "The yids, the yids, we've got to get rid of the yids". The modern-day slogan is "stop the boats". Is it any wonder then that they are seen as the new version of the Blackshirts of the 30's.
In the same edition it was reported that four of our MP's were supporting the far-right leader of Restore Britain, Rupert Lowe, in his parliamentary motion which basically gives a green light to the anti-migrant protests under the guise of peaceful protests. They are Jim Allister, Carla Lockhart, Alex Easton and Jim Shannon. These people share an ideology that denied peaceful protest here for decades denouncing it as subversion. As an aside members of the RNLI have been told not to wear their uniform in public as some of them have been abused for rescuing migrants. These 'peaceful protesters' have been heard screaming "traitor "at them. Peaceful protest? Not really.
